The Star Trek reboot was a huge risk. In an established universe where the history and events are established, it’s hard to add new stories. Sure, we can add new teams and space stations and even new centuries, but let’s face it: Star Trek will always be the story about Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Scotty, Uhura, Chekov and McCoy. Lightning in a bottle.
I grew up on that lightning and it was awesome. Nothing could touch it.
But it also shows its age. And we’re in the era of reboots. Some incredible, some best left forgotten. Star Trek has managed to dance right on the line of incredible. Casting perfection. Design perfection. Lens flares? Well, I liked them! The stories? Mostly good. Bits weren’t. But there’s no such thing as the perfect story.
But unexpected and perfect casting? That we can have. And all I can say about that is: SCOTTY!
Holy crap, Simon Pegg nailed the character and made him into the best Scotty 2.0 I could ever wish for. Humour. Professionalism. Energy. Intelligence. Intensity. He nailed it completely.
And you know, we don’t even meet Scotty until something like 2/3 into the movie. It’s a long wait but so damn worth it. And I wanted to honour that by painting from the first moments we met our new and improved Scotty. He got it, really fucking fast. Blink and he realised that he was dealing with something out of the ordinary.
