I was part of a local networking group for women here for a few years.
A really nice group of people. From them I learned how to network, how to stand up and speak to a group and how bad I am at remembering faces.
(I’m sorry, it’s been years, and I still don’t know who’s who.)
I had my last meeting with them on Tuesday. Just like with most of my groups and colleagues, I never quite fit.
I was the nerdy geek in a land of jewelry, nail-polishing, reiki-oriented women. And there’s nothing wrong with that, the group, or their acceptance of me, but one of my goals for 2017 is to ensure my time is used well.
This is the part of the year where everyone does some reflecting. Some planning for the future. And oh, the diets are out the window for sure!
Baileys, I’m looking at YOU!
My last day with this group of wonderful women, was a good one. One of the marketing tips the group leader talked about was picking a word for 2017. Use this word as a focal point for all the planning.
I picked the word LEAP.
My 2017 year is going to be a big one. It’s the year where I plan on finally making a living off my art. I plan on expanding into the US if I can get through the paperwork and visa process. And I’ve got a few other big, life-changing things in the works.
Leap is a pretty accurate word.
I don’t tend to make New Year’s resolutions any more. They never stick. I’ve vowed to lose the same 10 pounds for oh…about a decade now!
No, I make plans instead. Solid goals. This is where I want to be at this time next year, and work backwards to figure out how I’m going to get there.
This time last year, I hoped I’d be in my own studio space. BOOM! Done.
This time last year, I was looking forward to a year of ComicCons and travelling. Hoped it would come together. BOOM! Done. And it was awesome.
This time last year, I was scouting out galleries that would want to show my work several times a year. BOOM! Done. I’m in love with my current gallery, Illumine Gallery in St. Thomas.
This time last year, I wanted to be thinner….well…something had to give, right? But I actually did get my thyroid sorted out, so this time next year I will be half the woman I am today. Ha ha ha.
So right now, I’m making plans for this time next year, using LEAP as my focus.
What’s your word for 2017?
Don’t have one? Need to be inspired?
Start small, make the changes you can and fill your space with things that make you SQUEEE! Or calm and rejuvenate. Brighten and lighten.
Sometimes just changing the spaces we live in the most, starts the ball rolling on the bigger stuff. Boom!
Easiest change to make is to add some art. Need art? Let’s talk.
Did you know?
It’s so important to reflect on where we’ve been. When things get tough for me, I start thinking long term. One year from now, 5 years from now and so on. It really puts things into perspective.
